Bicycle Repair School

Beginning Monday, June 2nd, The Recyclery will be offering classes in Bicycle Repair. Classes will take place 7:30-10:00 p.m., and will run in 8-week cycles. Tuition is $165 for the whole course, or $30 for individual sessions. There will be a minimum of 3 students per class, and a maximum of 6 students per class, so as to be able to provide the best instruction possible. NOTE: if you pre-pay for the whole course, there will be no minimum number of students required- you will receive the instruction you paid for, no matter how many students show up.

This is a great opportunity to learn from a master mechanic, using professional-grade tools & equipment, while working on your own bike in a shop environment. Class schedule is as follows:

June 2nd:Introduction, Basic Fitting, Flat Repair, Safety Inspection
June 9th: Intro to Drivetrains- Rear Derailleurs, Chains
June 16th: Drivetrains Part 2- Front derailleurs, Chainrings, Pedals
June 23rd: Hubs, Freewheels, Cassettes
June 30th: Brakes
July 7th: Headsets, Handlebars & Stems
July 14th: Wheels Part 1- Basic Theory & Maintenance
July 21st: Wheels Part 2- Spoke Replacement & Wheel Truing

If you elect to take only certain classes, rather than take the whole course, we ask for 24 hours advance notice before your chosen class- this will allow the instructor to plan accordingly. Tuition for individual classes is payable in cash only; if you elect to take the whole series, credit/debit card is O.K.

About your instructor.....

Larry Myers has been riding, racing, and repairing bicycles for almost 40 years. He has built wheels and bikes that have won World & National Championships, and has an encyclopedic knowledge of everything from coaster brakes & 3-speeds, to the latest high-tech racing gear. He recently spent 2 years teaching at the Community Cycling Center, and is an avid collector and restorer of vintage lightweight bikes. Along with the nuts-and-bolt information, you will also learn interesting & eclectic bits of bike lore & history that will help to give a deeper insight into the wonderful machine that is the bicycle.

Sign up via e-mail, or come into the shop, and talk to Larry in person. We are still fine tuning this, so some of the details may change later on. Currently, in Portland, hourly labor rates at a quality shop range from $40-$65+ an hour- so save yourself some money, while also becoming a more self-sufficient cyclist.

Students who sign up for the complete series of classes, will also have the opportunity to purchase Park tool kits at up to 20% off of MSRP; this can amount to some serious savings!
